Overview

All info: Chevrolet Corvette C1

In January 1953, Chevrolet presented the first generation Corvette at the venerable Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. Despite a modern plastic body, sales of the roadster were slow. The reason for this was the sluggish six-cylinder engine with a choice of 150 or 195 hp. Chevrolet reacted to the low demand in 1956 and revised the design and engine range. In addition to the round twin headlamps and the disappearing tail fins, new features included the V8 under the hood, which with 225 to 360 hp finally offered performance worthy of the company. In particular, the increased engine power ensured decent sales figures – although the chassis with leaf-sprung rigid axle in the rear and drum brakes all around made it highly risky to exploit the power offered in case of doubt.
